Ecommerce: the numbers in Italy

In Italy, ecommerce is growing.

Why?

Because ecommerce in Italy is worth more than 13.2 billion euros, and throughout 2014, ecommerce will see continued growth approaching a 17 percent increase over 2013 (Data from the Milan Polytechnic’sNetcomm B2C eCommerce Observatory ).

Despite the fact that the crisis has unfortunately led to the closure of many businesses, e-commerce in Italy has experienced more than 20 percent growth in total sales over the past 3 years with the number of active buyers doubling from 9 million to 16 million over the same period.

What about with foreign countries?

In 2013, Italian sales abroad made through the Internet grew by 28 percent to 2 million euros, equal to nearly 1 euro for each of the 2 billion potential buyers in the world.

What are the most successful sectors of ecommerce made in Italy?

The sectors most affected by this revolution are IT (+32%), publishing (+28%), food (+23%), apparel (+21%), tourism (+11%) and insurance (+2%).
Inforeign relations, tourism andapparel account for 54 percent and 33 percent, respectively, with turnovers growing 21 percent.

Comforting data

The share of Italian companies’ turnover derived from e-commerce is around 6 percent, compared with 15 percent in Europe.
In Italy, only 11 percent have an e-commerce storefront integrated into their Web site.

These figures indicate that there is ample room for improvement and growth, for an increasingly attractive market.
