2018: international year of Italian food in the world
The year 2018 is approaching and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry together with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism announce that:
2018 is the international year of Italian food in the world
It is important to pay attention to Italian food in 2018.
Quality, promotion and enhancement of Italian food is made possible thanks to the work of the many farmers, breeders, fishermen, artisans and producers in the country.
2016 was the National Year of Walks and 2017 was the Year of Villages.
Italy, is the country with the largest number of agri-food products. Some of them, have been designated with the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) label, recognized by the European Union.
Policies to promote Italian food
The Ministry of Agriculture Food and Forestry, which is in charge of the promotion and protection of Made in Italy, presented in March 2016 the Memorandum of Understanding for the Enhancement of High Quality Italian Cuisine abroad.
It was signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
This protocol is part of the “Food Act” action plan and aims to enhance food and wine excellence.
Promotional efforts have been directed toward the United States, Japan, China, Russia, United Arab Emirates and Brazil.
The actions taken in 2016/2017 were as follows:
- Italian Cooking Week in November;
- MasterClasses aimed at foreign chefs to promote the Mediterranean diet;
- Italian days dedicated to quality cuisine.
The days were promoted by CONI and celebrated during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Policies, were aimed at providing continuity to the Expo 2015 in Milan, a global showcase that welcomed visitors from all over the world for 6 months.
Milan Expo 2015
The Expo theme was “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” Aimed at developing the culture, traditions and technologies related to the food sector.
The Expo area hosted four thematic areas:
- Pavilion Zero, which exhibited the history of mankind on Earth through the common thread of food;
- Future Food District, dealt with the evolution of technologies and changes in the flow of food production, consumption and distribution;
- Children Park, a space where children in entertaining games learned to appreciate and learn about gastronomic excellence;
- Biodiversity Park, in which the variety of ecosystems was reproduced.
The Milan Expo, was a great showcase for all participating countries.
It was a container event of many cultural and entertainment events:
-shows;
-conferences;
-show cooking;
-Educational laboratories.
Thanks to policies adopted over the years, Italy aims to protect and enhance all food and wine excellence.
The country has a wide and varied supply.
It is important to promote Italy in all its facets: artistic, landscape-environmental and culinary.
The aim is to make Italy known abroad.
