SEO on Google. Description returns to 160 characters
Google, as the undisputed leader in global search, sets the rules for indexing a website, and for that reason, you need to stay abreast of the times and adapt to changes in its algorithm in order not to lose competitiveness in your online business.
Each website, in fact, should be analyzed in detail to measure its search engine ranking and check, through special platforms, whether it is indexed properly.
It is important to follow precise guidelines to increase visibility and not lose positions, whether launching a new digital project, ecommerce or maintaining a website.
Google’s algorithm update
Over the years, Google’s algorithm has changed its settings several times.
Google’s changes are due to the large number of content and searches that require more precision in results.
In December 2017, Google had stipulated that the maximum number of characters shown in the snippet meta description, should be a maximum of 320 characters long. But to date, a step back has been taken and the meta description has returned to the traditional 160 characters, as it was previously. Therefore, it is recommended that the website be adjusted to the new search engine layout.
The importance of meta descriptions
The meta description is an html tag not visible on web pages, but in Google searches by users.
Taking our site into consideration, we show an example of a snippet:
The meta description appears in the search snippet along with the:
- meta-title (upper field), which for the time being, has remained at 70 characters.
- URL (lower field) of the referenced web page.
The advice, therefore, is to write meta descriptions that are no longer than 160 characters and that clearly and precisely summarize the most interesting content on the page. In the same, it is also advisable to include keywords consistent with the title.
Search snippet optimization falls under the field of search engine optimization ( SEO ). When we talk about SEO, we mean all activities aimed at increasing the volume of traffic a website receives from search engines, activities that all website owners, should be concerned about.
