Google Meet: video conferencing wherever you are

Google Meet is the platform for group video conferencing.

Google recently released a new update for Hangouts Meet, which is now preparing to change its name for good: it will simply be called Google Meet, the group video conferencing platform designed for G Suite and G Suite for Education users.

It offers advanced tools and features designed for professional users and educational institutions.

Meet is fully integrated with G Suite, so you can join meetings directly from an event or Calendar email invitation. Connect from a computer, phone, or conference room-you’ll find all the important event details exactly where you need them.

In the Enterprise version of G Suite, each meeting is associated with a phone number to call to participate. In this way, all guests can have access without no difficulty, even if they are traveling without Wi-Fi or data connection.

Teams using Skype for Business or meeting systems based on SIP and H.323 standards (e.g., Polycom and Cisco) can easily participate in a Meet meeting through the Pexip Infinity Platform.

With Google Meet you can start video meetings and participate in them from any device, wherever you are.

You can invite people inside and outside your organization, share your screen, and create meetings in which entire teams can participate, all with extreme ease and intuitiveness: initiating a video call with Google’s Meet requires no special equipment or prior technical knowledge.

Google Meet is beginning to integrate with Gmail: a corresponding widget has appeared in the sidebar of the Web page, from which a video conference can be quickly initiated.

The news: Google Meet will become free for everyone.

To date, the app can be downloaded for free to participate in a video conference, but only those who pay for a G Suite subscription can organize and manage them.

Google stated that:

  • Until September, video conferences of free users will have unlimited duration, after which they may end after 60 minutes,
  • the maximum limit of supported users is 100.

Google said the deployment will be gradual and will take place mostly during May, same for the integration with Gmail.

Google intends to focus on the security issue, e.g., registration to a Google account (the same one we use for Gmail, Maps, or Youtube) is required, plus anyone who wants to attend a meeting must first get permission from the organizers. This should help reduce privacy problems,

Meet’s video meetings are encrypted in transit, and the wide range of anti-misbehavior measures, enabled by default, allow meetings to take place safely. Google protects your data and safeguards your privacy.
